Applauding TV broadcasters for sensible response to piracy of Dr. Who

ABC1 controller Brendan Dahill said the decision to air the show online before television was motivated by a desire to reduce piracy, as well as fulfill the needs of drooling Whovians, who have waited almost a year for the new series.

" Piracy is wrong, as you are denying someone their rights and income for their intellectual property," Mr Dahill said. "The fact that it is happening is indicative that as broadcasters we are not meeting demand for a segment of the population.

"So as broadcasters we need to find convenient ways of making programs available via legal means to discourage the need for piracy."

Mr Dahill said that the ABC's iView "is the most watched catch-up TV service in Australia". Almost one in two online Australians aged 16-plus having used iView.

"The new iView app for iPhones and iPod Touch, launched on June 26, has seen a phenomenal 434,000 downloads recorded to date, with 210,000 downloads recorded in its first week,"Mr Dahill said.

Where my Wahoos at? I'm in @DailyProgress about POTUS AMA

Charlottesville was a fitting venue for Reddit’s big moment as a forum for democracy, because the idea behind it was sparked here seven years ago by University of Virginia graduates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian.

“Steve and I started Reddit from Charlottesville and had no idea that in less than a decade, the president of the United States would be using it to conduct an interview with the world,” Ohanian said Thursday in a conference call with local reporters.

Ohanian often recounts the story of how the idea for Reddit came to him while he was at a Waffle House, but he rarely specifies that it was the Waffle House here on U.S. 29.

He graduated from UVa in 2005 with degrees in history and commerce, while Huffman graduated the same year with an engineering degree.

Though the “guts” of Reddit didn’t get built until after the duo graduated and got further involved in the tech-startup world, the name was settled in the Alderman Library. Ohanian drew the site’s alien logo while bored in a marketing class at the McIntire School of Commerce.

“All the initial brainstorming for Reddit happened right here in Charlottesville,” Ohanian said.

Wahoo-wah!

Reddit to Mitt Romney: It's Your Turn @BloombergTV

At its peak, the visit drew more than 200,000 people simultaneously who were reading, asking or voting on questions, according to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Queries included the most difficult decision he’s made as president (“to surge our forces” in Afghanistan) and how he balances work and family (“when I’m in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm”).

Now, Ohanian says it’s Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s turn to face an Internet audience.

“He came out so strongly against SOPA during that CNN Republican candidate debate that it’s clear he too wants Internet freedom for Americans,” Ohanian said in an e-mail, referring to the Stop Online Piracy Act that Reddit opposed. “What better way to show it then to do a Reddit interview with the Internet public?”

Ohanian said there are plenty of users of Reddit at the White House  and that it took just a little bugging to get them to put Obama to the task. Harper Reed, chief technology officer of the president’s 2012 campaign, has been a “huge advocate,” Ohanian said.

So Romney, your thoughts? The Internet is waiting.

President Obama hits @reddit on ‘Ask Me Anything’ - @WashingtonPost

According to Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, the president is logging on to Reddit from the same city where the company was born in 2005. Ohanian and Steve Huffman met while students at the University of Virginia and officially founded Reddit after graduation.

“I was sitting in [the University of Virginia’s] Alderman Library when I came up with the name 'Reddit,' and I never could've imagined that seven years later, the president of the United States would be using it -- let alone from the same place!” Ohanian told The Post .

What a day for reddit and the open internet.

Doctor Who goes back in time to beat TV pirates

“Piracy is wrong, as you are denying someone their rights and income for their intellectual property. The fact that it is happening is indicative that as broadcasters we are not meeting demand for a segment of the population.

It's a beautiful thing when business adapts to new technology in order to satisfy customers.

Neil Armstrong, what a badass

Jerry Bostick mused, “So there’s Neil, calmly toggling these little banana switches, moving through the alternatives, until he figures it out.” He shook his head in wonderment. “I’m not sure that any of our other pilots, and we had some great ones, could have analyzed the situation and solved it as quickly as he did.” I could forget about trying to make anything of Neil not being the first choice for the lunar landing.

Armstrong displayed the same sang froid during Apollo 11, when the Eagle was heading toward a field of boulders and, with a fuel tank within seconds of empty, Armstrong flew the spacecraft to a safe landing spot. And then, back home and after the obligatory ticker-tape parades were completed, he never did anything to cash in on his fame, living out his life quietly, a good man.

In an age of vainglory, preening, and press agents, Neil Armstrong was that rarest of public figures: The man we can tell our children to admire who truly deserves it, for what he did, how he handled it, and who he was.

One of many anecdotes about the awesomeness of Armstrong. He'll be missed.
