Alexis Ohanian, the founder of Reddit, said that he will not be buying Facebook stock either, but not because he’s wary about its prospects.

Ohanian told CNN Tuesday morning that he won’t invest in the company because of its support of the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, which aims to make it easier for private companies and the government to share information on cyber threats. The bill, which passed the House last month, has raised concerns among privacy and civil liberty advocates who say that it will make it far too easy for a company like Facebook to share personal user information without due process.

Last week the app vied with San Francisco-based Socialcam Inc., which spun out of video website Justin.tv last year, for top app in the free section of Apple's app store. Socialcam, which has pulled ahead in the rankings, has 36 million users since it went live about 14 months ago.

In my four-plus years covering tech, I don’t think I’ve ever met another blogger who was happy with the search feature on their website. The options range from terrible to functional, but it’s never good, and I’ve always found that it’s easier to just search via Google.

Apparently Matt Riley and Quin Hoxie saw the same problem when they were working at Scribd. So they left to build a better website search engine, one that they’re calling Swiftype. The startup was part of Y Combinator’s latest class of companies, and it’s launching today.

Danilo Campos, iOS developer for Hipmunk: "The conjecture I'm buying, because it feels most consistent with Apple's priorities, is that the screen width and horizontal resolution will remain the same – but the screen height and vertical resolution will scale upward to hit the 4 inch mark. If Apple does this, it's actually pretty great news. The user gets to see more content at once. Auto-scaling height this way is already supported by Apple's layout tools. There's a decent chunk of apps, if they set their auto resizing masks properly, where developers wouldn't even have to change anything to support a taller display. So, if this happens – and it seems like the most Apple-y outcome I'd imagine – I'm losing zero sleep. If they alter the screen resolution in multiple dimensions, well, then things get a bit more complicated."

The ideas were required to have a track record. “Anyone and their mother could come up with ideas, but what we wanted to do with Fix Young America was to get the strongest voices in the room, the ones who showed there was proof in the pudding,” said Scott Gerber, 28, founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council and Fix Young America.

The solutions will be published Wednesday in a book. Mr. Smith, for one, wrote a chapter advocating student loan forgiveness for entrepreneurs who start businesses that create jobs.

Another solution was proposed by Zach Sims, whose chapter focuses on teaching young people JavaScript, the computer programming language. “There are a limited number of things you can do with an English degree,” said Mr. Sims, 21, co-founder of Codecademy, a free Web site that teaches programming and coding. “Coding skills are such a clear path to employment, regardless of your background.”

Mr. Sims suggests teaching coding nationally via sites like Codecademy and creating partnerships with high schools, colleges and local government. He wants to start a “national programming movement” and recently formed a partnership with the White House for a summer program to teach coding to underprivileged youth.

Neelie Kroes, speaking at a conference in Berlin, told delegates: “We have recently seen how many thousands of people are willing to protest against rules which they see as constraining the openness and innovation of the Internet.

“This is a strong new political voice. And as a force for openness, I welcome it, even if I do not always agree with everything it says on every subject.

“We are now likely to be in a world without SOPA and without ACTA.”

Her spokesman agreed that while Ms. Kroes never said ACTA was dead, the “political reality” is that it is.
