CNET: Why I gave up on Digg [and left it for reddit]

Tempted by the fruit of another

Reddit's been enjoying a wave of positive press lately--and with good reason. It does a lot of the same things Digg does, only better. I began casually using the site about three years ago, and have been going there daily for the past nine months.

Like Digg, Reddit revolves around users submitting and voting on stories. But there are a number of reasons it's different, and in many ways superior. Here are five big ones:

Welcome to reddit, Josh! Thanks for such a thoroughly awesome comparison story.

Wow, @reddit helps redditor pay for his mom's funeral costs

A little while ago I posted this AMA about my mom. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/ddn8l/my_mom_has_cancer_and_will_die_in_about_2_weeks/

And in this AMA I told you guys about our situation.

My dad just wanted me to tell you thank you for all of your support! You guys pitched in to help a family in need that you didn't even know!

My dad wanted to show his appreciation by taking this AWESOME picture.

ASK ME ANYTHING about the whole process.

*Edit: Added the donation link because I got a few inquiries. My dad still has about $4000 left to pay, anything helps. http://www.wilwaldon.com/donate.html . Thank you to all of those that donated, it means the world to me and my father right now.

** The donations keep rolling in! THANK YOU SO MUCH REDDIT! My dad cried on the phone when I told him about the outpouring of support from a website of strangers that he has never and will probably never meet. You guys are amazing. I'm overwhelmed with joy!

I still can't believe that the donations keep coming! 9:05 pm est. Thank you.

***It's 7:30 am September 23rd. I am overwhelmed by the support that Reddit has given our family. The donations are still coming! I can't wait to tell my dad and to see the expression on his face today! I think my eyes just sprung a leak. All I can say is WOW and thank you so much!

Seriously, I could write a blog entry a week about awesome random acts performed by the reddit community. Mainstream media, feel free to cover this stuff for a warm & fuzzy story about the Internet...

Ahead of "Social Network" Opening, Mark Zuckerberg Giving $100 Million to Newark Schools

Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive and a founder of Facebook, has agreed to donate $100 million to improve the long-troubled public schools in Newark, and Gov. Chris Christie will cede some control of the state-run system to Mayor Cory A. Booker in conjunction with the huge gift, officials said Wednesday.

The three men plan to announce the arrangement on Friday on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Well, the PR timing couldn't be better (and doing it on Oprah is a nice touch) but well done nonetheless, Mark. It'll be interesting to see how this $100M will be used (or squandered).
